Wisdom Tooth Extraction in Brooklyn Park, MN
Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars present in the back of your mouth. In general, they erupt between 17 and 25 years of age. But if they do not erupt well, you may have to undergo wisdom tooth extraction.
Wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical procedure to remove one or more wisdom teeth from your mouth. You may need this surgery if your wisdom teeth do not have enough room to grow. If left untreated, the condition may result in infection, pain, and other dental problems. You may need to opt for this surgery in other events too.
- You may need a wisdom tooth extraction if your teeth are impacted.
- The surgery is required when your teeth erupt at the wrong angle, or your mouth is not big enough to house these extra sets of molars.
- We may also perform wisdom teeth extraction if you have cavities or gum disease and you cannot reach your teeth with floss or toothbrush.
What Happens When Your Teeth Get Impacted?
Impacted wisdom teeth cause immense pain and discomfort. Trapping food and debris behind your wisdom teeth creates an infection. Such infection not only reaches your teeth but gums too. If not addressed on time, the infection damages your surrounding bone. Impacted wisdom teeth also lead to the development of a cyst around your wisdom teeth and complications with orthodontic treatments.
What Happens During Wisdom Tooth Extraction?
Depending upon the severity of your condition, we will administer one of the three types of anesthesia to numb the area and make you feel comfortable throughout the procedure. An incision will be made into your gum tissues to expose the teeth and bone. We will remove the bone that blocks access to your tooth roots. Upon reaching the teeth, we may divide them into sections using dental instruments so that it becomes easy to remove them in smaller pieces.
After removing your teeth, we will clean and disinfect the site of surgery. We will also clear debris from your teeth or bones and stitch the wound to promote healing.
What is the After-Care of Wisdom Tooth Extraction?
You may experience pain, bleeding, and swelling after the procedure. Place gauze on the site of the surgery to stop bleeding. We will prescribe some over-the-counter pain relievers to alleviate the pain or discomfort you may experience. For swelling, we suggest using an ice pack. Do not eat sugary or sticky foods. Rinse your mouth with saltwater.
